Mary Wanless focuses on the biomechanics of the riders she works with in each successive chapter. She starts with Heather Blitz, a naturally talented rider with nearly perfect carriage. She shows how Heather moves correctly with her horse, riding with outstanding balance seemingly effortlessly. After working with Mary though, even Heather's rides improve, as is clearly demonstrated in the "before" and "after" photographs.

The following chapters each work with a rider with common errors which affect both the rider and the horse's way of going. Mary's clear explanations of the how the rider impedes her horse's movement, and her suggested corrections are reinforced by the numerous photos, diagrams and explanations in each chapter.

Topics covered include rider position; muscle tone and stabilization; how riders' minds and bodies learn new techniques or change old habits; rider asymmetry; mental attitudes; lateral work; advanced work; faults like tipping forward, leaning back, hollowing the back and rounding the back. This is a highly accessible book (one of Wanless's best) with valuable information for riders of all levels, from beginners to Grand Prix riders.
