Schöffmann puts a new spin on a training exercises book, and it's sure to be a useful approach for your arsenal of schooling ideas. Presented to the original German audience in dictionary format, it has been beautifully translated for this English edition, lacking only the alphabetical order of the original (due to the translation). To compensate, there is an added alphabetical index following the table of contents.

Cross references within the text economize on explanations: if your work on transitions from one gait to the next requires a half halt, the text refers to the page where half halts are introduced, and resumes explanation of transitions, carefully noting the different ways the rider uses her aids for downward, upward or collecting and lengthening transitions. I found the instructions extremely easy to visualize and understand, and the accompanying photographs of Isabell Werth demonstrating movements quite helpful. Schöffmann also describes how the exercise should look, what common mistakes occur, the correct aids required, and the goal of each movement -- its role and value in your overall training within the Tranining Pyramid. In Werth's words from her Foreword to the book, "Only the rider who understands why the movements are important and what their purposes are can build a dressage horse systematically." There is an amazing amount of information packed between the covers of this book!
