Dressage Training Customized: Schooling the Horse as Best Suits His Personality by Britta Schöffmann - Hardcover (2010)

Grand Prix dressage rider Britta Schöffmann has provided an in-depth key to the major horse types, as well as training “roadmaps” for each.  All too often we try to apply the same techniques, in the same order, with the same intensity, regardless of our horse’s defining characteristics. In her book she explains that no matter how experienced a rider you are, every horse is different, and each one must be treated as an individual when it comes to planning and implementing his training program.

Falling for Fallacies: Misleading Commonplace Notions of Dressage Riding by Jean-Claude Racinet - Hardcover (2009)

This final book by Jean-Claude Racinet, who died in April of 2009, is a summary of his decades of extensive studies and experiences as a rider with, among others, the Ecole de Cavalerie of Saumur. Here he has undertaken a critical analysis of modern dressage doctrines which are often accepted without question. With careful reference back to anatomical and biomechanical aspects of the horse's movements, he presents arguments which are sure to provoke rethinking of many accepted conventions, such as the concept that raising a horse's neck causes his back to hollow, or that hind end engagement always lightens the front end.

Great European Schools of Classical Dressage: Vienna, Saumur, Jerez, Lisbon by Guillaume Henry - Hardcover (2010)

For nearly 400 years, four major riding schools have worked to perfect the equestrian art: the Spanish Riding School in Vienna; the Cadre Noir in Saumur, France; the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art in Jerez, Spain; and the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art in Lisbon. Each school is a guardian of traditions—ancient, technical, and artistic—and together they have preserved and enriched the long dressage tradition. This study reveals the inner workings of each of these schools, including details about their traditions, their systems for recruiting and training riders, and of course their horses. It also discusses the future of these prestigious yet seemingly anachronistic establishments.

This book contains precise instructions, with reasons for each training step. Both horse and rider should benefit from this straightforward training system. Horse in Human History by Pita Kelekna - Paperback (2009)

This book assesses the impact of the horse on human society from 4000 BC to AD 2000. Beyond the battlefield, horsepower also afforded great advances in transport, agriculture, industry, and science. Rapidity of horse communications forged far-flung equestrian empires, where language, law, weights, measures, and writing systems were standardized and revolutionary technologies and ideas were disseminated across continents. Following Columbian contact, Old and New World cultures are evaluated in terms of presence or absence of the horse, and Spanish conquest of the horseless America is seen as the model for subsequent European equestrian colonization of horseless territories around the world.
